BlackBerry: A case study on failure to change?

Just a short blog this week as I’m working on a couple of other projects. But I wanted to give a shout-out to a movie I’ve had my eye on, as I think it could offer an interesting look at how established companies fail to change.

I’m talking about the new BlackBerry movie, which focuses on the phones we all had in the mid-2000s.

Tech enthusiasts should be familiar with the story of the once-established handset giant, Research in Motion (RIM), that produced the BlackBerry. They were the market leader, until Apple launched the iPhone and pulled the rug from under them.

I’m hoping that the movie will explore how even established companies are vulnerable to predation from competitors if they fail to adapt. It might also delve into how difficult it is to adapt in the fast-paced world of technology.

According to the Hollywood Reporter’s review, the movie is “an affectionately told story of Canadian innovation, loss of innocence and of unlikely bedfellows making entrepreneurial magic.”

My plan is to watch the movie when it comes out and use it as a case study for a future blog post. So, do check back here in a few weeks!
